As part of its efforts to
conserve the endangered manatees throughout the world, the
Wildlife Advocacy Project has supported important conservation
work to protect and conserve the West African manatee in
the Ivory Coast. The work is being done by Dr. Akoi
Kouadio, a leading figure in conservation efforts in that
country, who is working with the Wildlife Conservation Society
to conserve the forests adjacent to the lagoon system where
there are important populations of elephants, chimps, pygmy
hippos, and probably the only stable manatee population
in West Africa. Dr. Kouadio is collecting important
information on the biology and status of the manatee and
developing and implementing much needed long-term management
strategies for the species’ survival and recovery.
